This antique chest, likely a Japanese Tansu or a Korean Bandaji, showcases a striking blend of rustic utility and intricate craftsmanship. Constructed from warm, honey-toned wood with a prominent, undulating grain—possibly elm or zelkova—the piece is heavily reinforced with hand-forged iron hardware. The lower section features a large drop-front or double-door compartment secured by wide, decorative iron hinges and a central butterfly-shaped lock plate, while the upper register is divided into three small drawers and a set of basted-veneer cupboard doors.
