地藏王菩萨, also known as Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, is one of the Bodhisattvas in Buddhism and is commonly regarded as the Bodhisattva who saves departed souls and aids beings in the realm of the afterlife. Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva holds a significant place in the Buddhist faith in China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and other regions.

The name "Kṣitigarbha" translates to "Earth Treasury" or "Protector of the Earth," and his primary responsibilities include:

Salvation of Departed Souls: Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is believed to alleviate the suffering of departed souls due to karmic hindrances and other reasons in the afterlife. His duty is to assist these souls, relieving them of suffering, guiding them out of the cycle of rebirth, and helping them attain liberation.

Protection of Beings: Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is also seen as a guardian deity who shields beings from calamities, diseases, and malevolent forces.

Compassion and Endurance: Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is renowned for his profound compassion and endurance. He willingly endures various hardships for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is typically depicted seated on a lotus throne, holding a staff and wearing a crown. In China, he is widely venerated, especially in temples and festivals. His festival, known as "Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva's Birthday," is celebrated on the 3rd day of the 6th lunar month. Devotees come to pray for blessings, offer merit to the departed, and engage in acts of kindness.

In Buddhism, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva represents the spirit of compassion and salvation, making him a deeply revered figure.
