This antique Fujian wood carving is a masterwork of high-relief dimension, capturing a sprawling, narrative-driven scene from a traditional Chinese opera. Bathed in a rich, aged cinnabar red with weathered gold accents, the panel follows a cinematic progression: on either flank, equestrian figures emerge from fortified city gates, their horses frozen in mid-gallop. The central focus is a grand interior courtyard where a dignified assembly of figures in flowing scholar’s robes and official headdresses gather around an ornate altar or table, engaged in a moment of high drama or ceremony. Every inch of the dark, dense wood is meticulously utilized, featuring intricate architectural details like lattice railings and tiled roofs, all framed by a continuous border of scrolling vines and auspicious clouds. The deep undercutting creates a striking play of shadow and light, giving the many-layered figures a lifelike presence as they transition between the bustling street scenes and the hushed, ceremonial gravity of the center.
