This is a beautifully preserved, antique tiered Chinese wedding or food basket (Hé Hé/喜盒 or 식盒), likely constructed from lacquered wood and bamboo. It features an appealing octagonal, stacking design with a sturdy overhead carrying handle, which appears to be wrapped with rattan or woven bamboo for comfort and reinforcement. The rich, warm brown lacquer finish is adorned with intricate hand-painted or stenciled designs in black and gold. The top lid features a central depiction of a figure, possibly a child or deity, seated next to a vessel/bowl, surrounded by what appear to be flying creatures (birds or bats, often a symbol of good fortune). The sides of the three stacking compartments are decorated with stylized floral motifs (like peonies or chrysanthemums) and geometric borders, further enhanced by vertical bamboo slats serving as structural support and featuring vertical Chinese characters. These baskets were traditionally used to carry food, gifts, or ceremonial items, particularly during wedding processions or New Year celebrations, and the overall craftsmanship suggests a piece of cultural and historical significance
